Is Hiring a Designer Right for Me?

Prior to becoming a web designer, I was a professional dancer, teacher, and choreographer. At times, my husband and I struggled to make ends meet for our young family. I say this to say, I completely understand why a designer price tag can be intimidating.

But, hiring a designer is about more than just the price tag. Before assuming it is better to DIY, consider these things:

5 Reasons to Hire a Web Designer

  1. You have more money than time. You’re a person who wants to focus on what you do best while the designer does what they do best. You understand that custom web design is an investment in your business and you’re willing to commit to your success.

  2. You’re understand the need to make an investment in your brand or business. A website is part of your marketing team. It is your online home. It is not an optional part of your business. If money is tight, but you know this is the right move, ask about payment plans!

  3. You don’t have the skills to design and build a website. Just because a website builder says that it is easy for anyone to use, doesn’t mean it is easy for everyone! You can actually waste money by losing sales and opportunities while waiting to figure it all out. Contact a designer who’s work you like and see what’s possible!

  4. You began with a DIY and you know that it is time to upgrade. As you grow, you may find that your site needs more capabilities than it currently offers. You may get to the end of your own technical abilities. You may also find that you’re ready for a full package with branding and support so that your site really functions as a member of your team. If that’s you, its time to talk!

  5. Your site isn’t serving you. If you’re not selling or no one can find you through a search engine, it is time to get some help. The fix may be some simple tweaks or it may require a complete makeover.

3 Reasons to DIY

  1. You have more time than money. If you have plenty of time to read articles, hours to experiment, make mistakes, and try again, you can try to DIY. I got into this field because of my own DIY, but I’ve since spent years learning my craft. Web design is about so much more than pretty colors. It is about user experience, formatting that converts, and integrations that make life easy!

  2. Have you finished a site but aren’t sure if it is “right?” Choose an Ask Me Anything Session or a Strategy Session for a site review!

  3. You don’t really know why you want a website. Unsure of what you’re selling or serving? Don’t hire a designer. It is a surefire way to invite stress into your life and waste money.

Instead, I recommend that you work your way through a program like Web Plan in a Weekend. This program will help you to develop, collect, and organize your thoughts before you ever consider building a website.

You could even combine this program with a DIY design if you’re just getting started!

  4. You don’t play well with others. If you aren’t willing to hand over control to someone you trust, don’t hire a designer! Micromanagement is no fun for anyone.

You’ll feel like, “I had to tell them everything to do!”
They’ll feel like “Why did they hire me if they aren’t willing to listen to me?”

When you don’t know what you’re doing or you know just enough to be dangerous, you can really undermine a designer’s work. Requesting changes and revisions without understanding the underlying whys won’t serve your brand in the long run.

I hope this helps you to point you in the right direction for your present needs. Got a question? Ask in the comments!
